चिदम्बरम मन्दिर के रहस्य- वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण

थिल्लई नटराज मंदिर एक ऐसा स्थान है, जिसमें खगोल विज्ञान, ब्रह्मांड विज्ञान और विज्ञान की कई अन्य धाराओं से संबंधित रहस्यों की परतें हैं।

इस मंदिर में मेरी यात्रा २५ जनवरी २०२० को हुई थी, शनिवार को भगवान नटराज के आशीर्वाद के साथ एक बहुत ही अकस्मात योजना थी और मेरे बहुत अच्छे दोस्त श्री कार्तिक नागेश्वरन और श्री एन डी नटराज दीक्शिधर (स्वयं थिलाई नटराज मंदिर के पुजारी) द्वारा सहायता प्रदान की गई थी। मुझे बहुत ही ज्ञानी दीक्शिधर और उत्साही भक्त कार्तिक के अद्भुत मार्गदर्शन का आशीर्वाद मिला, जिसने मुझे चिदंबरम के इस आध्यात्मिक दौरे में मदद की। मैं उन्हें पर्याप्त रूप से धन्यवाद नहीं दे सकता । भगवान शिव ने मुझे एक तिथि और समय जो कि शुक्ल पक्ष में एक श्रवण नक्षत्र पर सिद्धि योग था, में दर्शन का सौभग्य प्रदान किया ।

महत्व को सारांशित करने के लिए यह एक ऐसा मुहुर्त है जो विचार, अनुभव और इंद्रियों के माध्यम से ज्ञान प्राप्त करने का मौका बढ़ाता है।

चिदंबरम वह स्थान है जहाँ भगवान शिव को उनके नटराज रूप में उनके लौकिक नृत्य को दर्शाया गया है। मैंने हमेशा सनातन धर्म को उस रूप में समझने की कोशिश की है जहां यह मुझे स्पष्ट तरीके से ब्रह्मांड को समझने में मदद करता है। और मेरा दृढ़ विश्वास है कि इससे निकलने वाले सिद्धांत अस्तित्व की वास्तविक प्रकृति की व्याख्या करते हैं। शिव जो सिर्फ एक देवता नहीं बल्कि ब्रह्मांड और उससे परे हैं। वे नृत्य सहित सभी कला रूपों के स्वामी हैं।

लिखति यदि ग्रहीत्वा शारदा सर्वकालम्

भले ही स्याही पाउडर (कज्जलम) पहाड़ की तरह एक ढेर हो, सागर एक स्याही का पात्र हो, कल्पतरु की शाखाए एक कलम (लेखनी) के रूप में इस्तेमाल की जाती है और पूरी पृथ्वी (उर्वी) को लेखन पत्र (पात्रा) बना कर देवी सरस्वती (शारदा) आपकी प्रशंसा में अनंत काल (सार्वा कालम) के लिए लिखना जारी रखें, वह (सरस्वती) आपके गुणों (गुना) की थाह नहीं पाएगी और आपकी प्रशंसा करने मे असमर्थ है।

उपरोक्त श्लोक शिव की महानता की व्याख्या करने का प्रयास करता है, जिसे आप कितनी भी कोशिश कर लें, उसके बावजूद पूरा नहीं किया जा सकता है।

चिदंबरम दुनिया के उन चुनिंदा स्थानों में से एक है, जहां अतीत में कई श्रद्धेय संतों (सिद्धों) को संज्ञान के माध्यम से परम ज्ञान प्राप्त किया है।और यह सब कुछ के अस्तित्व को समझाने के लिए प्रतीकवाद के साथ अपनी विशिष्टता के कारण ऐसा है।

सदगुरु के शब्द में जब उन्होंने सर्न लैब, स्विट्जरलैंड CERN Lab, Switzerland में नटराज की प्रतिमा (उप परमाणु कण अनुसंधान के लिए शीर्ष संस्थान) को देखा, जहां वैज्ञानिकों में से एक ने कहा कि यह उनके चल रहे काम का चित्रण करने में निकटतम है।

अद्वितीय वैज्ञानिक डिजाइन, प्रतीकवाद और उनके अर्थ

जब प्रकृति स्थिर हो जाती है तो सभी कंपन समाप्त हो जाते हैं

स्थान: दुनिया का केंद्र बिंदु चुंबकीय भूमध्य रेखा- 8 वर्षों के शोध के बाद पश्चिमी वैज्ञानिकों ने पता लगाया है कि भगवान नटराज का बड़ा पैर जिस स्थान पर रखा गया है वह दुनिया के चुंबकीय भूमध्य रेखा (Google कीजिये) का केंद्र बिंदु है। इसके अलावा यह 11 डिग्री अक्षांश पर स्थित है जिसका अर्थ है कि केन्द्रापसारक बल (Centifugal force) आकाश की ओर ऊपर की ओर निर्देशित है। महत्व: इसका मतलब है कि यह पृथ्वी के चुंबकीय प्रभावों से खुद को मुक्त करने के लिए एक आदर्श स्थान है। इसे आध्यात्मिक रूप से देखने से व्यक्ति अपने आप को सांसारिक प्रभावों से मुक्त कर सकता है और हमारी ऊर्जाओं को ऊपर की ओर ले जा सकता है जो हमारी आध्यात्मिक जागृति की सहायता कर सकता है
5 तत्व और सत्र : चिदंबरम में नटराज मंदिर “पंच भॊत” में से एक है, यानी 5 तत्वों का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले 5 मंदिर। इनमें से चिदंबरम आकाश (आकाश) का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है। श्रीकालहस्ती पवन (वायु) को दर्शाता है। कांची एकम्बरेश्वर पृथ्वी (थल) को दर्शाता है। ये सभी 3 मंदिर 79 डिग्री 41 मिनट देशांतर पर एक सीधी रेखा में स्थित हैं। महत्व: ये स्थान रणनीतिक रूप से विभिन्न ऊर्जा तत्वों से मानवीय संवेदनाओं को जोड़कर महानता प्राप्त करने के लिए हमारी ऊर्जा का मार्गदर्शन करने वाले है।
वास्तुकला: मंदिर की वास्तुकला को पूर्व चोलन माना जाता है और इसकी कल्पना 200 ईसा पूर्व के आसपास के सबसे महान योग गुरु, पतंजलि ने की थी। मंदिर की छत जहां एक व्यक्ति बैठ सकता है और ध्यान कर सकता है उसके पास 21600 सोने की चादरें हैं जो एक मानव द्वारा प्रतिदिन ली जाने वाली सांसों की संख्या को दर्शाती हैं और ये सोने की चादरें 72000 सोने के कीलो का उपयोग करके जुड़ी होती हैं जो मानव शरीर में कई संख्या में नसों (नाड़ियों) को दर्शाती हैं। यहां तक कि पोन्नम्बलम को डिजाइन करने में अंकशास्त्र का भी ध्यान रखा गया है जो दिल का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है और बाईं ओर झुका हुआ है। महत्व: मंदिर हमारे हृदय और तंत्रिका तंत्र के संबंध को दर्शाती है। सरल शब्दों में, हमारी सांस और नसें जो सोने की तरह शुद्ध और मूल्यवान हैं। हमारे शरीर का लौकिक संबंध अच्छी तरह से दर्शाया गया है
स्वर्ण छत्र पर 9 कलश : 9 प्रकार के शक्ति या ऊर्जा का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं। 4 स्तंभों में 4 का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हुए कानागाभास पकड़े हुए हैं। अर्थ मंडपम में 6 स्तंभों में 6 प्रकार के सशस्त्र का प्रतिनिधित्व किया जाता है। आसन्न मंडपम में 18 स्तंभ 18 पुराणों को दर्शाते हैं। महत्व: मंदिर शास्त्रों का प्रतीक है जिसका अर्थ है कि इसके माध्यम से सच्चा ज्ञान प्राप्त किया जा सकता है। इस विशाल मंदिर परिसर की वास्तुकला में उनके कद के अनुसार शास्त्रों के महत्व को भी दर्शाया गया है।
इस मंदिर की एक अनूठी विशेषता नटराज की छवि है। इसमें भगवान शिव को नृत्य भरतनाट्यम के भगवान के रूप में दर्शाया गया है और यह उन कुछ मंदिरों में से एक है जहाँ शिव को पौरणिक, आयनिक लिंगम के बजाय एक मानवशास्त्रीय मूर्ति द्वारा दर्शाया गया है। महत्व: भगवान नटराज का लौकिक नृत्य भगवान शिव द्वारा बनाए गए ब्रह्मांड की गति का प्रतीक है।
शिव के 3 रूप: सोने की छत वाला चरण चिदंबरम मंदिर का गर्भगृह है और इसमें भगवान तीन रूपों में विराजमान हैं: “मूर्त रूप” – भगवान नटराज की एक आकृति के रूप में नृशंस रूप, जिन्हें सकल थिरुमनी कहा जाता है। “अर्ध-रूप” – चंद्रमौलेश्वरर के क्रिस्टल लिंग के रूप में अर्ध-मानवशास्त्रीय रूप, सकला निश्क्कल थिरुमनी और “निराकार” – चिदंबरम रहस्याम में अंतरिक्ष के रूप में, गर्भगृह के भीतर एक खाली स्थान, निशंक थिरुमनी।
आनंद तांडव मुद्रा: मंदिर को लोटस हार्ट ऑफ़ यूनिवर्स में स्थित माना जाता है ”: विराट ह्रदय पद्म स्थलम। यह आदर्श स्थान है जहाँ भगवान शिव आकाशीय नृत्य करते हैं और सब कुछ नियंत्रित करते हैं।
शिवगंगा टैंक: शिवगामी अम्मन मंदिर के सामने स्थित एक जटिल भूमिगत जल स्रोत है जो अप्राप्य है। कहा जाता है कि पानी आकाश से सीधे गंगा की एक अदृश्य धारा से आता है।
शिवगामी अम्मन मंदिर: यह दक्षिण भारत का सबसे पुराना ज्ञात देवी मंदिर है। मूर्ति दिन के दौरान अपनी उपस्थिति बदल देती है और देवी उसकी मुस्कान और कभी-कभी उसके भ्रूभंग से मंत्रमुग्ध हो जाती है। मैंने खुद इस बदलाव को देखा और मैं इसे केवल अपने अनुभव के आधार पर लिख रहा हूं। इस मंदिर को वह स्थान कहा जाता है जहाँ देवी ने अपने दिव्य रूप में शुक ब्रह्म महर्षि को दर्शन दिए थे और उन्हें श्री यंत्र दिया था जो इस बहुत ही सुंदर मंदिर के परिसर में स्थापित है। शुक ब्रह्म महर्षि के रूप में भी जानते हैं कि शुकदेव को व्यास का पुत्र और आदि शंकराचार्य के महान गुरु (गुरु का गुरु) माना जाता है। आपको शिवगामी अम्मन मंदिर के परिसर में भगवान शंकराचार्य और श्री यंत्र की एक मूर्ति मिलेगी।
1000 साल पुरानी वेजीटेबल डाई पेंटिंग: शिवगामी अम्मन मंदिर और थिलाई नटराज मंदिर की छत पर आप 1000 साल पुरानी डाई पेंटिंग देख सकते हैं। इन चित्रों में मंदिर और ऋषियों से संबंधित विभिन्न किंवदंतियों और कहानियों की कथाएं हैं जो मोक्ष प्राप्त करते हैं और आत्म बोध से मुक्त हो गए।

नटराज की मूर्ति का महत्त्व और रहस्य

नटराज की मूर्ति एक महान ऋषि बोगर (महान तमिल सिद्धारों में से एक) द्वारा बनाई गई थी। मूर्ति को सोने और तांबे के मिश्रण से बनाया गयी है। वह सिर्फ सोने से मूर्ति बनाने वाले थे , लेकिन अगर मूर्ति इस तरह से बनती तो आरती के दौरान ऐसी प्रकाश उत्सर्जित करती जो भक्तों की आंखों को अंधा कर सकती थी।

नटराज के पैरों के नीचे दैत्य मुयालका (जिसे अप्समारा भी कहा जाता है) दर्शाता है कि अहंकार और अज्ञान उनके पैरों के नीचे है।
एक हाथ में आग (विनाश की शक्ति) का अर्थ है बुराई का नाश करने वाला
वर मुद्रा मे हाथ दर्शाता है कि वह सभी जीवन का उद्धारकर्ता है।
पीछे स्थित रिंग ब्रह्मांड को दर्शाता है।
उनके हाथ में डमरू जीवन की उत्पत्ति के लिए प्राणमय किरण का प्रतीक है।

नटराज अपनी दिव्य मुस्कान के साथ ब्रह्माण्ड के क्रम और संतुलन को बनाए रखने के लिए अनंत शांति के साथ एक नृत्य करते है। यह सभी अस्तित्व का सार है

गर्भगृह में, आप भगवान शिव की मूर्ति को अपने आनंद तांडवम मुद्रा में देख सकते हैं, उसके पीछे बहुत कठिन है देवी पार्वती को देखना। मैं अपने दोस्त कार्तिक की मदद से लंबे समय से अलग-अलग कोणों पर कोशिश कर रहा था, जो चिदंबरम मंदिर में कुछ समय के लिए रहे है, और प्रतीकों के बारे में गहरी समझ रखते है। वह महान सिद्धों के एक अनुयायी है और Thevaram के माध्यम से गहन ज्ञान रखता है।

मैं दोनों मूर्तियों को एक बार आरती के दीपक जलाने और अलग-अलग कोणों पर ले जाने पर देख सका था। जैसा कि ऊपर दिए गए बिंदु 6 में बताया गया है कि हम भगवान शिव के तीन रूपों के महत्व को समझ सकते हैं, जब हम खाली जगह पर दीक्षाधर नटराज दंडपाणि के साथ गए थे। फिर भी गर्भगृह में कुछ मूर्तियाँ हैं जैसे भैरव देवता जिन्हें केवल गुरु के मार्गदर्शन में देखा जा सकता है। जब पुजारी नटराज विग्रह (मूर्ति) के पीछे का पर्दा हटाते हैं तो चिदंबरम भाव प्रकट करते हैं। एक बार जब पर्दा हटा दिया जाता है, तो आप केवल बिल्वपत्र की लटकती हुई माला देखेंगे और कुछ नहीं। तात्पर्य यह है कि एक बार जब माया की आँखों को चमकाने वाली स्क्रीन को हटा दिया जाता है, तो हमें अपनी वास्तविक आत्म का एहसास हो सकता है। इसका सीधा सा मतलब है कि केवल एक बार जब आप खुद को भ्रम, अहंकार और सामान से अलग कर लेते हैं, तो आपको आंतरिक शांति और आत्मबल मिल सकता है।

मेरी यात्रा विवरण

NH32 पर चेन्नई से 220Km स्थित चिदंबरम तक पहुंचने के लिए, चेन्नई / बैंगलोर से एक बस ले सकते हैं, जो पूरे दिन के दौरे के लिए सीधे सुबह तक पहुँच सकती है। कोई टैक्सी या मंदिर शहर के लिए सीधे ड्राइव कर सकता है, सड़कें अच्छी हैं। मैंने पांडिचेरी के रास्ते चेन्नई से बस ली। पहुँचने के बाद हमने मंदिर के द्वार / गोपुरम में से एक के बहुत नजदीक एक कमरा बुक किया। फ्रेश होने के बाद हम मंदिर के शुरुआती दर्शन और परिक्रमा के लिए गए। हमारे दीक्षिधर ने हमारी बहुत देखभाल की और एक सबसे अच्छा नाश्ता उपलब्ध कराया क्योंकि यह मंदिर का प्रसादम था। धन्य भोजन में वेन पोंगल, एकरा एडिसल और विशेष चावल शामिल थे, जो सभी देसी घी की उदार मात्रा में पकाया जाता था। प्रसादम अद्भुत था और अब हम अपनी आध्यात्मिक भूख को भी पूरा करने के लिए तैयार थे।

हमने प्रसादम खाया उसके बाद हम अपने समूह के साथ विशेष पूजन और दर्शन के लिए दीक्षाधर के साथ गए। मंदिर में नियमों और परंपरा का पालन होता है जिनका पालन पूरी निष्ठा से किया जाता है। मंदिर में जाने के लिए पुरुषों को पारंपरिक धोती / मुंडा / लुंगी पहननी होती है और अपने ऊपरी शरीर को खुला रखना होता है। इसलिए पूजन के लिए जाते समय जींस और टीशर्ट नहीं पहनी जाती है।

यह पाषाण मंदिर 50 एकड़ के विशाल परिसर मे बना है। कई खंभे, गलियारे और हॉल हैं, मंदिर में एक बेमिसाल सौंदर्य और गतिकी है जो खड़ी चौकों में रखी गई है। इस मंदिर में नौ गोपुरम हैं, जिनमें चार मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार गोपुरम हैं। पूर्वी गोपुरम में एक सुंदर विशेषता है, आप यहां 108 नृत्य पोज (नाट्य मुद्रा) देख सकते हैं। चित्त सभा (लकड़ी की छत के साथ) और कनकसाभ (तांबे की छत के साथ) नटराज के मंदिर के आसपास मंदिर के केंद्र में हैं।

कमल की छत पर नक्काशी की गई है। जब हम हॉल में कदम रखते हैं तो यह खिलता हुआ दिखता है। मंदिर में प्रवेश करते समय हमारे मन (चित) के खुलने का संकेत देता है।

नटराज शिवकामी देवी के साथ और ऋषि महर्षि पतंजलि (साँप के पैर के साथ) और महर्षि व्याघ्रपाद (शेर के पैर के साथ)

मूल देवता एक स्वायंभु लिंगम है जिसे थिरुमूलनाथर ( आकाश लिंग रूप ) कहा जाता है, जो कई आगंतुकों को नहीं पता है। लेकिन भगवान नटराज के आशीर्वाद से हम पहली मंजिल तक पहुँचने में सफल रहे जहाँ हमने आकाश लिंगम की पूजा की। कहा जाता है कि विशेष चट्टानों के माध्यम से बनाए गए चुंबकीय क्षेत्रों के साथ एक व्यवस्था थी, जिसके कारण शिवलिंगम मध्य हवा में लटका रहता था। यह शिवलिंग 2000 साल पहले भी शुकदेव (शुक ब्रह्म महर्षि) द्वारा पूजा जाता था। यह एक स्वायंभु लिंग है जिसका अर्थ है कि यह स्वयं का गठन है। भले ही थिरुमूलंथर मूल देवता हैं, लेकिन नटराज पीठासीन देवता हैं। उनका संघ शिवकामी या शिवकामा सुंदरी है। अपार, सांभर, सुंदरर, और मणिकावसागर द्वारा रचित थेवरम गीतों ने अपनी रचना में इस चिदंबरा क्षेत्र की प्रशंसा की है। व्याघ्रपद और पतंजलि जैसे महान भक्त संतों के बारे में कहानियाँ असंख्य और अद्भुत हैं।

गणपति और शनमुख के लिए अलग-अलग मंदिर भी हैं। सूर्य ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और शिव का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हुए तीन सिर वाले देवता के रूप में मौजूद हैं। विशिष्ट रूप से, नटराज मंदिर के पास एक प्रमुख विष्णु मंदिर भी है। तमिल वैष्णव संत कवियों, अलवारों के गीत, इस गोविंदराज तीर्थ को चित्रकूडम कहते हैं।

शिवकामी अम्मन मंदिर समान रूप से राजसी है और एक शक्ति पीठ (शक्ति केंद्र) है। आप प्रवेश द्वार पर ही महसूस कर सकते हैं कि देवी स्वयं हर कार्य देख रही है। छत पर भित्ति चित्र जो कि 1000 वर्ष से अधिक पुराने हैं, कथाओं और किंवदंतियों को दर्शाते हैं, जो वनस्पति रंगों का उपयोग करके किए गए थे और अभी भी मंदिर की प्रमुख विशेषता है। मंदिर की बाहरी परिधि पर चित्रगुप्त की एक मूर्ति है जो हाल के दिनों की है। मैं उस मूर्ति के ठीक सामने अकेला खड़ा था और जो मैंने महसूस किया वह जादू जैसा था, ऐसा लगा जैसे चित्रगुप्त स्वयं अपनी आँखें खोल रहे हैं, मुस्कुरा रहे हैं और आशीर्वाद दे रहे हैं। संशयवादियों को यह समझने के लिए दौरा करना होगा कि क्या यह मतिभ्रम था या यह प्रभाव पैदा करने के लिए एक कलात्मक तकनीक थी। हमने कुछ समय श्री यंत्र के इतिहास और महत्व का अध्ययन करने में भी व्यतीत किया।

मंदिर परिसर में इतने सारे छिपे हुए रहस्य और अर्थ हैं कि भक्त / पर्यटक कई दिनों तक उसी की खोज में बिता सकते हैं। मंदिर दुनिया भर के कला पारखी, उत्साही छात्रों और शोधकर्ताओं को आकर्षित करता है जो मंदिर के बारे में देखने और जानने के लिए आते हैं।

थिल्लइ वन

थिल्लई नटराज नाम थिलाई मैंग्रोव वन, पिचवारम से आया है। पिच्छावरम, चिदंबरम मंदिर से लगभग 15 किमी दूर आधे घंटे की ड्राइव पर है। यह कुछ ऐसा है जिसे आपको नहीं भूलना चाहिए क्योंकि यह विभिन्न वनस्पतियों और जीवों के साथ एक जगह है। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि वर्ष 2004 में जब सुनामी आई थी, तो मैंग्रोव वृक्षों (वनस्पतिक नाम एक्सोकेरिया अगल्लोचा) के साथ जंगल के कारण, चिदंबरम इन पेड़ों द्वारा प्रदान किए गए प्रतिरोध के कारण अप्रभावित थे, जो एक कुशन की तरह काम करते थे। आप इस जंगल की अद्भुत सुंदरता के साथ हमारे यूट्यूब चैनल पर वीडियो देख सकते हैं।

हम लगभग 11:30 बजे वहां गए और 45 मिनट तक नौका विहार का आनंद लिया। यह पक्षीविदोंऔर प्रकृति प्रेमियों के लिए भी एक आदर्श स्थान है। आप पक्षियों और जानवरों की कुछ दुर्लभ प्रजातियों, मछलियों और कीड़ों को भी देख सकते हैं।

पिचवारम से हमारे लौटने और हमारे दोपहर के भोजन के बाद देर से दोपहर में हम गोविंद्राज मंदिर जैसे अन्य हिस्सों में घूमने के लिए मंदिर परिसर में गए। कार्तिक की कहानियों के साथ समय ने उड़ान भरी और हमें पता होने से पहले शाम हो गई थी। एक घटना थी जिसे मैं बहुत याद करता हूं: हम शिवकामी अम्मन मंदिर में शुक ब्रम्हा महर्षि (तोते के चेहरे वाले ऋषि) के बारे में बात कर रहे थे और तभी हमने अपने पास कुछ तोते उड़ते हुए देखे, यह आशीर्वाद के सूक्ष्म संकेत की तरह लगा।

My visit to this temple was on 25th Jan,2020 Saturday was a very impromptu plan with the blessings of Lord Nataraja and assisted by my very good friend Mr Karthick Nageswaran and N D Natraja Deekshidhar ( priest from Thillai Nataraja temple itself). I was blessed with the amazing guidance of the very knowledgable Deekshidhar and ardent devotee Karthick who helped me on this spiritual tour of the temple town, Chidambaram. I cannot thank them enough and Lord Shiva to have me on a date and time which also had a Siddhi Yoga, on a Shrawana Nakshatra in Shukla Paksha.

All this may sound latin but to summarize the significance it is a timing which helps to acquire knowledge through thought, experiences and the senses.( Superlucky Me..)

Chidambaram is the place where Lord Shiva is depicted in his Nataraja form doing his cosmic dance. I have always tried to understand Sanatana dharma in the form where it helps me to understand the universe in a clearer way. And I strongly believe that the theories emaniting from it explains the true nature of existence. Shiva who is not just a god but the universe and beyond.He is the master of all the art forms including dance.

“असित गिरि समं स्यात कज्जलं सिन्धु पात्रे
सुरतरु वर शाखा लेखिनी पत्रमुर्वी
लिखति यदि ग्रहीत्वा शारदा सर्वकालम्
तदपि तव गुणानांSमीश पारं न याती”

-Even if ink powder (Kajjalam) be a heap like a mountain, ocean be an ink pot, a branch of Kalpataru (the famous tree of gods fulfilling all wishes) be used as a pen (lekhani) with the entire Earth (Urvi) as writing paper (patra) and even if Goddess Saraswati (Sharada) herself continues to write for Eterniny (sarva kaalam) in your praise, She (Saraswati) will not be able to fathom your virtues (Guna) and praise you befittingly.

The above shloka tries to explain the greatness of Shiva which cannot be put to words irrespective of how hard you try.

Thillai Nataraja temple is a place which is having layers of secrets relating astrophysics, cosmology and many other streams of science. Chidambaram is one of the few places in the world where one can achieve tacit knowledge through cognition, like many revered sages (Siddhars) in the past. And it is so because of its uniqueness with symbolism to explain the very existence of everything. In the word of Sadguru when he saw Nataraja statue in CERN Lab, Switzerland ( Top institute for research for sub atomic particle research) where one of the scientists said that it is the closest in depicting their ongoing work.

Unique scientific design and takeaways

Location: Center Point of world ‘s Magnetic Equator– After 8 years of research the western scientists have found out that the place where Lord Nataraja’s big toe is placed is the centre point of world’s Magnetic equator ( Google it). Also it is located at 11 degree latitude which means that centrifugal force is directed upward towards Sky( Akash). Significance: It means that this is an ideal location to free ourselves from the earth’s magnetic influences. Looking at it spiritually one can free themselves from the worldly influences and channelize our energies upward which can assist our spiritual awakening
5 Elements and Senses: Nataraja temple at Chidambaram is one of the “Pancha bootha” i.e. 5 temples representing the 5 elements. Out of these Chidambaram represents the Sky(Akash). SriKalahasthi denotes Wind( Vayu). Kanchi Ekambareswar denotes Earth(Thal). All these 3 temples are located in a straight line at 79 degrees 41 minutes Longitude. Significance: These places were strategically the power centres destined to guide our energies to achieve greatness by connecting human senses to the various prime elements
Architecture : The temple architecture is believed to be pre cholan and was conceived by the sage Patanjali , the greatest Yoga master somewhere near 200 BC. The temple roof where one can sit and meditate has 21600 gold sheets which represent the number of breaths taken by a human everyday and these gold sheets are connected using exactly 72000 gold nails representing that many number of nerves (nadis) in the human body. Even the numerology has been taken care in designing the ponnambalam which represents the heart and is tilted to the left. Significance: The temple represents connection of our cardiovascular and nervous system. In simple terms, our breaths and nerves which are as pure and valueable as gold. The cosmic connection of our body is well represented.
9 Kalasas on the Golden Roof represent the 9 types of Sakthi or Energies.4 pillars holding the Kanagasabha representing the 4 Vedas. The 6 pillars at the Artha Mandapam represent the 6 types of Sashtras.The 18 pillars in the adjacant Mandapam represents 18 Puranas. Significance: The temple embodies the scriptures which means true knowledge can be attained through it. The importance of the scriptures are also represented in accordance with their stature in the architecture of this huge temple complex.
A unique feature of this temple is the bejeweled image of Nataraja. It depicts the Lord Shiva as the Lord of the dance Bharatanatyam and is one of the few temples where Shiva is represented by an anthropomorphic murthi rather than the classic, anionic Lingam. Significance: The Cosmic Dance of Lord Nataraja symbolises the motion of the universe as sustained by Lord Shiva.
3 Forms of Shiva: The gold-roofed stage is the sanctum sanctorum of the Chidambaram temple and houses the Lord in three forms: The “Tangible form” – the anthromorphological form as an appearance of Lord Nataraja, called the Sakala Thirumeni. The “Half-form” – the semi-anthropomorphological form as the Crystal linga of Chandramouleswarar, the Sakala Nishkala Thirumeni And the “formless” – as the Space in Chidambara Rahasyam, an empty space within the sanctum sanctorum, the Nishkala Thirumeni.
Anand Tandava Posture: The temple is supposed to be located at the Lotus heart of the Universe”: Virat hridaya padma sthalam. This is the ideal spot where Lord Shiva performs the celelstial dance and controls everything.
Shivganga Tank : Located opposite to the Shivgami Amman temple has an intricate underground water source which is untraceable. The water is said to be coming from a invisible stream of Ganga directly from Akash.
Shivgami Amman Temple: This is the oldest known devi temple in South India. The idol changes its appearance during the day and devi mesmerizes with her smile and sometimes her frown. I myself witnessed the change and I am writing this only based on my experience. This temple is said to be the place where devi appeared to Shuk Brahma Maharishi in her divine form and gave him Shree Yantra which is installed in the premises of this very beautiful temple. Shuka Brahma Maharishi also know as Shukdeva is believed to be the son of Vyasa and the great guru ( Guru’s Guru) of Adi Shankaracharya. You will find an idol of Lord Shankaracharya and Shree Yantra in the premises of Shivagami Amman temple.
1000 year old Vegetable dye paintings : On the ceilings of the Shivagami Amman Temple and the Thilai Nataraja temple you can see the 1000year old dye painting. These paintings have narratives of the various legends and stories related to the temple and the sages who attained moksha and were liberated by self realization.

Nataraja’s idol was created by Bogar, another great sage (one of the great Tamil Siddhars). The idol is said to made with a mixture of Gold and Copper. He was supposed to create the statue with just gold but if done that way it would emanate piercing light during arati which could blind the eyes of the devotees.

The demon Muyalaka (also referred to as Apasmara) under Nataraja’s feet signifies that arrogance and ignorance is under his feet
The Fire in this hand (power of destruction) means destroyer of evil
The raised hand signifies that he is the savior of all life.
The Ring at the back signifies the cosmos.
The drum (damru) in his hand signifies the primal rythm for origin of Life.

Natraja with his divine smile performes a dance with eternal stillness to maintain the order and balance of the cosmos.This is the essence of all existence

In the sanctum sanctorum or the Garbh Gruha , you can see the idol of Lord Shiva posing in his Anand Tandavam pose, behind her very hard to see is Goddess Parvati. I was standing there for long enough trying different angles with the help of my friend Karthik who has been to Chidambaram temple a few times, and has deep understanding about symbolisms.He is an avid follower of the great siddhars and has profound knowledge through the Thevaram songs. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA3Qb5DA4d5y4IxaTrU3Vdw) I could see both the idols once the arati lamps were lit and were moved at different angles. As explained in point 6 above we could understand the significance of the three forms of Lord Shiva encompassed in the main temple when we went with Deeksidhar Nataraja Dandapani to the empty space. Still there are some idols on the sides which can be viewed only under guidance of a master like Bhairava devta. The chidambaram rahasya unfolds when the priests remove the curtain behind the Nataraja vigraha (idol). Once the curtain is removed you will see only the hanging garland of bilvapatra and nothing else. The meaning is that once the screen of maya shielding our eyes is removed , we may realize our true self. It simply means that only once you detach yourself from illusions,ego and belongings, you may find inner peace and self realization.

my travel account

To reach Chidamabaram located 220Km from Chennai on NH32, one can take a bus from Chennai/Bangalore to reach directly early morning for a full day tour. One can hire a taxi or drive straight to the temple town, the roads are decent. I took a bus from Chennai via Pondicherry. After reaching we just booked a room very close to one of the gates/gopurams of the temple. After freshening up we went for the initial darshan and a parikrama of the temple. Our Deekshidhar took great care of us and provided one of the best breakfast possible as it was the prasadam from the temple. The blessed food comprised of Ven Pongal, Akaara Adisal and special rice, all cooked in generous quantity of desi ghee. The prasadam was fulfilling and now we were ready for fulfilling our spiritual appetite as well.

After we had the prasadam we then went with Deekshidhar for the special poojan and darshan with our group. The temple has set of rules and tradition which are to be followed. The men have to wear a traditional dhoti/munda/Lungi for visiting the temple and keep your upper body uncovered. So jeans and Tshirts are not to be worn when going for poojan.

This stone temple is a sprawling 50-acre complex.With several pillared corridors and halls, the temple has an unmatched aesthetic and dynamics with the interiors laid out in stacked squares. This temple has nine gopurams, with four main entryway gopurams. The eastern gopuram has a standout feature, you can see the 108 dance poses (Natya Mudras) depicted here. The chit sabha (with wooden ceiling) and the kanakasabha (with Copper ceilings) are at heart of the temple, surrounding the shrine of Nataraja.

Nataraja with Shivakami Devi and sages Maharishi Patanajali (with snake legs) and Maharishi Vyagrapada (With Lion Legs)

The original deity is a swayambhu lingam called Thirumoolanathar, which is not known to many visitors. But with the blessings of Lord Nataraja we were able to reach the first floor where we worshipped the Akash Lingam. Its said that there was an arrangement with magnetic fields created through special rocks the shivalingam use to hang in mid air. This shivlingam was even being worshipped by Shukdev (Shuka Brahma Maharishi) more than 2000 years ago. This is a swayambhu Ling which means it is self formed. Even though the Thirumoolanthar is the original deity , Nataraja is the presiding deity. His consort is Sivakami or Sivakama Sundari. Thevaram songs composed by Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar, and Manickavasagar praise this Chidambara Kshetram in their composition. The stories about the great devotee sages like Vyagrapada and Patanajali are innumerous and intriguing.

There are also separate shrines for Ganapathy and Shanmukha. Surya is present as a three-headed figure, representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Uniquely, there is also a major Vishnu shrine near the Nataraja shrine. Songs by Tamil Vaishnavite saint poets, the Alwars, refer to this Govindaraja shrine as Chitrakoodam.

The Shivakami Amman temple is equally majestic and is a shakti (Power centre). You can feel at the entrance itself that the devi herself is watching every action. On the ceilings the murals which are more than 1000 year old depict the stories and legends, which were done by using vegetable dyes and are still prominent feature of the temple. On the outer periphery of the temple there is an idol of Chitragupta which is of recent times. I was standing alone right in front of that idol and what I felt was like magic, it felt as if the Chitragupta himself is opening his eyes, smiling and blessing. Sceptics will have to visit to understand whether I was hallucinating or was it a artistic technique to create the effect. We also spent some time studying the history and significance of the Shree Yantra.

The temple complex has so many hidden secrets and meanings that one can spend many days exploring the same. The temple attracts a lot of art enthisuiasts, arhictecture students and researchers around the world who come to visit the temple.

thillai vanam (thillai forest)

The name Thillai Natraja came from the magrove forest around Chidambaram, Picchavaram. Pichhavaram is a half hour drive from Chidambaram temple around 15km away. This is something that you should not miss as this is one of the spots with varied flora and fauna. It is said that when the Tsunami came in the year 2004, because of the forest with mangrove trees ( botanic name Exocoeria Agallocha), Chidambaram was unaffected due to the resistance provided by these trees which acted like a cushion. We went there around 11:30 am and enjoyed boating for 45 minutes which also is a delight for birdwatchers, nature lovers with variety of avifauna and some rare species of animals, fish and insects as well.

The wonderful time at Picchavaram backwater boat ride amidst nature

In the late afternoon after our return from Picchavaram and our lunch we went to the temple premises to explore the other parts like Govindraja temple. The time flew by with stories from Karthick and it was evening before we knew it. There was one incident which I cherish a lot: we were just chatting at Shivkami Amman temple about the Shuka Bramha Maharishi (sage with the parrot face) and just then some parrots flew by us, it felt like a subtle signal of blessing.

Evening arati

The devi looked very relaxed and casual in the morning with a blissfull smile like a mother who cares for the kids. But in the evening she looked magnanimous like a powerful queen with stern face commanding discipline. I was awestruck with the metamorphosis of the Goddess Shivakami. Seperate arati is done for the main deity Lord Natraja and other temples in the premises.The evening anushthan includes a bath for the deity and then the arati by the young priests who enunciate each mantra and shloka with perfection. Its a divine feeling. Our day ended with contentment and a feeling of achievement. I got Kunchikapadam and holy ashes as take away blessings from the holy Deekshidar himself. Kunchikapadam is a special ornament made out of special flowers and hay worn by Lord Natraja in the legs which looks like a garland.

We had our dinner at Hotel Shri Krishna Vilas Veg Restaurant which is a wonderful place with very authentic food. The simplicity of the place and the efficiency of the service will amaze you. The food here is well priced and they serve you in banana leaves.The cleanliness and hygiene is taken care well. It is a must visit for a satvik meal before you call it a day.

Chidambaram Nataraja Temple is a wonderful pilgrimage destination with deep mystic symbolism. When you visit the region, you can also easily travel to other temples like Thillai Kali, Patanjali Eswarar, and Swarnapureeswarar. Visit this temple especially during the Margazhi Festivals (Arudra darshan) in Dec-Jan and Aani festival in June-July for spiritual upliftment.
